United States authorities have stopped a ship traveling from Russia to the Port of New Orleans, Louisiana, with a cargo of fuel products. The tanker is owned by a Greek shipowner and was chartered by Vitol, a commodity trading house located in Switzerland. It sailed from Russia’s Taman peninsula in the Black Sea in early June carrying fuel oil and vacuum gasoil, the data showed, and was planning to arrive in New Orleans on Sunday.
Vitol said it had complied with all of the sanctions levied against Russia.
In related news, the G7 meeting in Germany this week is set to broaden sanctions on Russia, set a fuel price cap, and raise tariffs, a move intended to weaken the Russian military by blocking access to Western technology. The G7 plans to use funds earned by tariffs to help Ukraine cover the costs of war.
